The ” Merry City ” celebrates Yorkshire’s most loved crop.

Wakefield is the capitol of the “Rhubarb Triangle”, the area bounded by Morley, Rothwell and Wakefield itself. Indeed, the school that I attended is slap bang in the middle of this area. The school is surrounded by acres of the crop and I remember students used to bring bags of sugar in case they had the opportunity to breach the school boundary and raid the fields.

Rhubarb is of course grown in fields all over the country, however, inside the “Rhubarb Triangle”, it is also grown in forcing sheds. The sheds have no light other than candles which are lit to enable harvesting. The lack of light helps to produce stems that are long, strong and bright pink.
Forced rhubarb is only available for a few weeks during early springtime. In recent years it has become very popular and consequently, more difficult to find on supermarket shelves.

It was a comprehensive 35-16 victory for the team from the windy city at an overcast Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

There is lots to see and explore in a city of politics and power.
So many monuments and so many museums.
