I enjoyed a train journey to visit the city of Nijmegen.
Nijmegen is located on the Waal River and it is very close to the border with Germany. During World War 2 it became the first Dutch city to fall into German occupation. In September 1944 it saw very heavy fighting during Operation Market Garden as allied troops advanced through northern Europe.

Allied forces reclaimed the town and also the road and rail bridges that became pivotal structures when they advanced into Germany.

Nijmegen is now a friendly, busy and bustling city with lovely street markets and cafes. It was a pleasure to spend time there.
